I have not read all the respond, but I would never leave any cash in my check-in luggage.

One could claim there was a thousand of dollar missing in the interoffice mail envelope.

Can't shift the blame to others for something that's simple. (Yes I understand you are upset by the fact your luggage was opened and money missing. But it is not AC's fault)
