eUpgrade Credits taken while return is waitlist?

My upgrade for AC33 YYZ-SYD cleared, but still on the list fo AC34 SYD-YYZ.

I'm on a B fare which would mean 8 credits, each way. However, Air Canada took 16 credits yesterday when my AC33 cleared. I thought they might have released some "R" on the return flight, but still showing Waitlisted.

I am pretty certain each leg is 8 credits. Should I assume AC will return the 8 credits in the event my AC34 doesn't clear?
