Why not? My recollection is that you can use any vehicle for NEXUS; you have to have vehicles registered and inspected for SENTRI, but not NEXUS. That is my recollection.
Thanks for pointing that out. I think you're right. Under the GE
FAQ it says "there are no additional requirements for a member to use the NEXUS lanes coming into the U.S.", whereas it notes that your car must undergo a 7-point vehicle inspection before you can use the SENTRI vehicle lanes. I guess that has to do with more trafficking of persons and drugs on the U.S.-Mexico border. After reading this, I think you'll check your trunk every time you head north.
On a related note, SENTRI users may want to check out this
NPR piece on how a SENTRI-user was unwittingly transporting more than 100lbs. of marijuana across the border when she was arrested by Mexican authorities and incarcerated in a Ciudad Jarez jail for a month while everything was sorted out. I think she got pretty lucky.
I'd like to to gain access to the NEXUS program for entry into Canada, but the
FAQ indicates you need to apply and pay separately. In the same
FAQ it says that they're "...working on extending NEXUS and SENTRI benefits to current Global Entry members at a later date." My family lives in the Seattle area and I see that there's a Canadian Enrollment Center at Boeing Field, so it would be pretty easy for me to complete those formalities when the time comes when I'm out that way for a visit.
