As mentioned, the low pass over Downtown LA is one of the two regular approach pattern for all flights coming from Asia and Hawaii. I have been on this approach at least 15 times on different airlines. The alternative approach pattern is a little further to the north and turn around near the 605/10 freeway junction.
I don't recall ever flying over DTLA on my flights back from Asia. You may be right about the weekend thing but I am home most weekdays and my window at my place is one of the huge (one entire wall) and I don't have curtains. Maybe I will pay a little more attention.
