The Seoul-LAX flight was about 5 years ago, but my recollection was that we came in over the coast north of L.A., and flew to the north of LAX over downtown, then made an arc and then cameinto LAX from the east/north. This was on Korean Airlines. Why you'd see mostly international (foreign) carriers, I don't know. Maybe the planes are more identifiable???
Maybe the circling in for approach has to be larger for 777 and 747? What you said makes sense though.
