The DC-9's are great in Business Class and alright in coach. Just get to the front of the aircraft because the engines in back are much louder than the 717 BMW engines.
The other key for AirTran: always pay with an AmEx card. You get double points for A+ vouchers when you do. See their website for details.
As far as the beverage coupons, it saves the airline tens of thousands in lost revenue. Most airlines have a real problem of their flight attendants pocketing drink and headphone money. There's no secure way to track it. The coupons and beverage kits change it all and they have a tracking system that saves them money.
They went with the "A" logo and color scheme because it was distinctive -- a logo that can be seen from far away and colors that are not typical for aircraft. I like the colors, but I'm a bit biased as a frequent flyer. I'm glad they're doing well as an airline.
