People say redeeming miles on UA's daily SFO/LAX-SYD (Sydney) services are hard to come by. This includes the MEL (Melbourne) tag on from Sydney.

I second what other people say. Almost no availability on UA C/F on the Australian route. The easiest way to find it - is usually via united.com and look for the award seats (my oppinion). At least there you can sea a whole week at once. But that means you have to be flexible with the dates. Air NZ is easier (via NZ) - with short term bookings. They seem to open up a couple of days before the flight.
