this is a GS benefit (all elites can do at least one and does not have to be on same PNR). Only GS can do more than one on a separate PNR when travelling together.
I did two of these itineraries using $200 certs yesterday; both with a companion with no status. Web support told me they were happy to do this for a 1K 2MM flyer.
