Don't know about SYD-SFO/LAX, but headed the other way there are definitely different prices between SFO and LAX - especially if they are matching a price from Delta or V which they will often only do on LAX-SYD but not SFO-SYD.

More than once I've seen tickets from SFO-SYD pricing out as two fares - one SFO-LAX, and a second LAX-SFO - as it was cheaper than the equivalent SFO-SYD price.
