The direction is important as well as your turnaround point. You get more leeway for a TATL flight than for TPAC. Last month we booked:

YYC-SFO-FRA-BKK-HDY-BKK-FRA-YYC all F except for the Hat Yai J flights. The great circle mapper shows it to be 23536 miles (12780 out to HDY and 10756 to come home).
