Not exactly sure how it works but I had a connection after a red-eye from west coast a few weeks ago and had offer at check in for my connecting flight- I took offer and when I showed up at gate 10 min. prior to boarding agent said she didn't need anymore volunteers I showed her the slip and said I volunteered about 10 hours ago. She looked at slip and said Thank you and put me at top of list. ( I received $300)-
