The security officer kindly asked me why, and I explained that I was concerned about the rays the machines output. An effective, yet professional pat-down was done, and I went along to collect my carry-ons. From what I've read, this is definitely not the norm? What's the common denominator in the other stories, the TSA, perhaps? For those who don't know, Schiphol has private security, contracted by G4S.
As already noted, for many reasons you can in no way compare that experience to TSA and air travel in the US.
Saying that you don't mind the enhanced pat-down because you had a pat-down in AMS has no relation to the current state with TSA.
