A shot at the upgrade lottery is getting more and more expensive these days!
When the difference is this large, buying through a TA that can access a consolidator can usually get you much cheaper W fares.
For example BOS-TPE W fare in June with a consolidator that I use is only $1545++ (approx $1880 ai). Still not cheap, but a lot better than published and the tickets are often refundable minus a fee rather than getting flight credit (and don't have AP requirements).
