Nothing illegal about it. There may be regulations which prohibit having alcoholic beverages which have not been served by the crew, but if the crew are prepared to serve the alcohol to the passenger , then it is fine. There is nothing to say that the crew will agree to do it.
On a recent flight on another airline, I sat next to a guy who brought 6 tall cans of beer in his bag and drank them all in rapid succession, then passed out. The crew saw him and didn't seem to care much.
