If they sell a gate upgrade at the gate for $150 it will be after all elites have cleared. I am surprised they had gate upgrades available on a dtw/lax flight. Whenever I take that flight for business I usually buy a discounted First since it's usually cheaper than a Y and I don't have to worry about losing the upgrade if there is an aircraft switch or an irrops. For DTW/LAX, I can usually justify expensing a ticket in F and the fare is usually around $350 more.
