Upgrade for points is IMHO one of the best ways to use these points, specially on longer flights. Think about OT as kind of low cost lottery ticket, possibly sometimes saving money or points you would otherwise pay for better flight class or upgrade Don't be angry on OT, it's not worth it. You don't win in Las Vegas casino every time either. But statistics works, there is above zero probability to get OT upgrade and sometimes you will get it Certainly if you fly often enough. Not guaranteed for any specific flight though even if you might be the only one passenger on board.

Would be very interesting to read - let's say on Wikileaks website - description of real OT upgrade algorithms and how all this works. But very likely after such leak real methods would be changed anyway... Just like in quantum mechanics - if you measure some parameter, other parameters change as a result of the measurement process itself.
