One other option (bar the MFUing already mentioned by other posters) would be to get the Chase credit card and earn enough for the 2-4-1 voucer at which point you'd probably have enough miles to travel TATL in F with a partner, at which point the charges seem less harsh! Obviously this isn't such a great plan if you'd be taking point spend away from any other schemes you're in
I remember my early days on the BA Board, battered by numerous TLAs:

CX = Cathay Pacific
MFU = Miles For Upgrade
TATL = Transatlantic
F = First Class
