You could also keep them on the same account but delete mom's books from the device (and delete the kid's books from mom's). They'd still be in the archive, but the wireless would have to be turned on and the kid would have to deliberately select them to redownload.
My wife and I share an account and while I can find "her books" in the archive they are never automatically downloaded to my device. Maybe I'm doing something wrong that I never get them but when buying online we just choose which device to deliver it to and it shows up correctly.
