I've been checking in 3 hours in advance at JFK for international flights for over 15 years and never had any problems. I think this time it had something to do with the fact that we flew 2 days after the snowstorm or it's really been stolen as I am in the process of filling out a property loss claim and was advised by my home insurance to report this to police as well.
