Maybe the rule is stupid, but it is easy to get around and getting mad at an agent for following the rules is a recipe for a huge mess. When they choose to not follow the rules there is outrage. You cannot have it both ways.
This was a common sense/customer service issue. Its not like they were asking him/her to allow a 150lb suitcase on board.

But since your asking, how about letting us with Kindle's read them below 10k feet. Flying SEA-EWR last month the creature masquerading as FA told me to turn mine off which I promptly did. I was in 2B. 3 mins later she sat down in her jump seat and proceeded to take out her Kindle and read until touchdown. I did take great pleasure calling her a "God damned idiot" to her face while walking off.
