Had the tortilla soup for lunch on BOS-MSP last week. I agree it was too spicy and not particularly flavorful. However, I also really like the concept. It's a very welcome addition on the flights that otherwise get a cold meal. I'll be interested to see if this is just a wintertime thing.
I really miss (most of) the soups on CO. I believe CO's are catered already in the bowls, which the FAs heat. Not sure which is better, but CO's bowls are a bit heavier, deeper and less prone to spillage IMO.
