One of the functions of a union is representing their members. Any disciplinary item, you typically can have your union rep there with you.

Of course that's their stated position. There's a COntract between the employees and the COmpany that they must follow.
Now if a pilot decides to wait two hours to repair a maintenance item for a non-critical light at a remote outstation, that's not officially a work rule violation now is it?
Not sure if you were around during UA's Summer from Hell, but I'm thinking that stuff they're "allowed" to do (e.g., if they're allowed to refuse overtime, declare a plane unfit for a broken lav, etc.), that's what they're thinking about doing.
