standby on UA is same day only (CO is 24 hours before the booked flight)
But as
dyung mentioned there is not such thing as intl to intl in the USA and especially at LAX. USA requires full immigration and customs clearance even if not staying in the USA. So unless your ZRH-LAX flight arrives early, 55 minute connection probably isn't going to make it.
The standard I-I MCT for LAX is 120 minutes
