Agree with Ghostrider 10 one hundred percent. He was rude, ignored the request to turn off the phone thrice, and caused delay and inconvennience to other passengers.
I think that in these cases, just getting thrown off the flight is too small a punishment.
What would you suggest if you were a passenger in that flight?
My suggestion: $1,000 fine, ban from future flights from that airlines, free drink voucher for the passengers, apology to other passengers through the PA system, monitory compensation to anyone who might have been inconvenienced etc.
