really wanted to make a statement, it wouldn't have been hard to force the WTMD to alarm. Would a single car/house key in a "5th pocket" be large enough to set off the WTMD?

If you want to alarm the WTMD you don't need metal. Just touch the side when you walk through. Accidentally bump it with your hand. That's all it takes.
