I was stuck with paper tickets for 1 trip in the past 5 years, and it was a fairly unpleasant experience. At one point they had to hold up departure of a flight (just for a moment) because the GA hadn't collected my ticket and someone had to come on board to retrieve it. Also the odd looks I got when traveling with it by airline staff was off-putting.
To me paper tickets are kind of like paying with silver dollars. It works, but gets you strange looks and reactions.
You just reminded me of all the downsides of paper tickets! It seemed like almost every flight there was some passenger with a glitch (usually the agent pulled the wrong coupon in xxx and the agent at IAH had to straighten it all out -- all the while making the passenger feel like it was his/her fault).
