It's not just limited to CO. I've had the same issue, where CO will go out of it's way to rewrite a reservation to retain a valid eticket.
I've also had the most unpleasant experience with DL where the agent actually completely hosed my reservation, but some how managed to get my first segment correct, but all the re-routing was hosed. The poor agent in dallas had no idea what he got himself into. He was so enraged he issued me paper tickets and profusely apologized to me for the other agents destroying my eticket. To his benefit, he did give me the chance to keep my eticket, but he told me it would take him 5 minutes to issue it as a paper ticket or 30 minutes on hold with DL reservations to keep it an eticket. Sometimes it is just much faster to issue the paper ticket and keep the line moving. Slightly OT, but FWIW.
