Earlier it was reported that a Mylar balloon moving in front of a motion-detecting thermostat would fool it into thinking someone was present.

I always carry a deflated one with me, complete with its string, but have not yet needed to test it out. My plan is to inflate it and then hang it from a thumbtack in the ceiling.

Un-inflated Mylar balloons are available at party stores.
