Android SD Card Damaged - Help?

I had the problem when I first got my Nexus One with it periodically telling me my SD card was damaged and I'd need to reformat it. The card still mounts just fine in Windows, if I plug it into a card reader.

After searching around, I found that this was likely because the card had been formatted in Windows. So, I used my phone to format the card. I'm always very good about making sure to "safely remove" it in Windows and on the phone. Until tonight, I hadn't experienced the problem in quite some time.

But it's baaaaack! Does anyone know why this sort of error seems so common on Android (at least for me) and what can be done to prevent it? It's really tiresome having to copy everything off the card to my computer, format, and re-copy.

Thanks!
