One more detail - they used to sell coupon booklets for the shuttle (maybe they still do), I think 8 in a booklet. Didn't matter whether you were going DCA or BOS, they just ripped out a coupon and you were on your way. My Dad used to carry both DL and US, and as someone mentioned, he was always less than 30 minutes away from a flight.
