That is not my experience. I do make a point of contacting the front desk in advance to ask for an upgrade, and it's paid off. You can get great rooms or even suites, plus appetizers or breakfast quite often. Great value at Crowne Plaza.

At the higher end, if Hyatts or SPG hotels are around, they usually beat the Hilton properties.
