I have a Briggs & Riley backpack (3yrs), Victorinox laptop-brief (7yrs), Tumi nylon backpack (Mrs. DHG took). All are fantastic bags for different reasons. Neither of them are leather and both were in the $250-300 range. They have held up fantastic after daily use and abuse.
Heck, even my LL Bean backpack (made out of nylon) does a fantastic job of holding up and I've had it for 10 years. $60 bag and is the perfect bag (and my bag of choice) for a quick overnight personal trip.
One of the other big reasons I prefer nylon over leather is weight - the nylon is substantially lighter and really makes a difference - especially as someone that has had some major shoulder problems; the more weight I can keep off my shoulder, the better.
