I usually wait for a few months (in the Aeroplan Amex). If you reapply immediately, I believe they just reactivate your old card.
with my cancelled amex card(s), the cancelled card(s) still shows up on my online login page… does yours? does that affect the re-issuing of a new "card" and/or bonus?
