Some carriers don't print it. Lufthansa uses a red stamp at ORD instead of handwriting SSSS. I'm sure every carrier or station has its own way but, as you said, "a very few airlines no longer print the SSSS" meaning a statement saying "the SSSS 'tagging' no longer exists" is false.
