The OP has a few choices:
1. Drive back to the airport, and show a rep the damage. Sorry, you will have to pay for gas and tolls. It is unfortunate you did not notice the damage at the airport, but things like this happen.
2. Continue to post here sarcastically towards anyone who is offering you what CO's policy is. Stating fact does not equate agreeing with it.
3. Fly another airline, and become GOLD elsewhere. If CO is so bad, you should not give them your business. Oh, and don't check guitars on United, or Pets on American.
4. Buy yourself a shinny new bag, and be done with it.
5.
