I stopped packing jeans and sneakers for Europe a long time ago. Jeans are comparatively heavy and not versatile enough. Khaki, olive or black twill slacks go pretty much everywhere.

As for sneakers (or "trainers" as they say in the UK)... it's true, they mark you as a rube. Unless you're hiking or hitting the gym over there, leave them behind. I would certainly not wear sneakers to a nice restaurant in Paris or any other serious European city.
