Not so. Based on the trend in the Last Minute Upgrade thread, the prices for check-in upgrades are generally consistent, and not dependent on booking class or member status. Either the paid upgrade is available for a fixed price, or not available at all.

Last year, I paid $899 for an upgrade YVR-SYD (outbound, I took Economy home), and I thought that the upgrade was well worth it. (The link also shows that SSWU certificate space (formerly I-space, now R-space) was available on that flight in August 2009.) The price may be more (and it may be more difficult) to obtain an upgrade that also includes YYZ-YVR.
