We couldn't get the data retrieved from the bad hard drive (I've not yet given up), so we're starting all over. All of the music that I have on my iPhone/iPod will be lost the next time that I try to sync it up; fortunately there's nothing I might lose that I don't have on a music CD.
Can't you just copy the files off the ipod? I did that for a friend a few months back. IIRC, just use Explorer (assuming Windows) and search for the files. They are all named something like
X9YZM3AQ8.MP3, but they are there. Of course I don't have an ipod and just organize my many years of music in folders myself, with copies scattered among various SD cards and hard drives. Not the most organized system (because of my laziness), but I don't lose everything if one device crashes.
