How do you know who may not show up the day of the flight?
I was status "denied" on my BOS-IAD flight a few days ago, and when I checked in, the nice woman handed me my upgraded boarding pass.

So I think it's pretty clear that "waitlisted" and "denied" are synonyms.

Somebody at United should think about fixing that UI bug in their software.
