J&K state subjects (Indian citizens or otherwise) are the only ones allowed to own immovable property in Kashmir -- but in the case of women who are state subjects that marry a non-state subject, good-bye immovable property. At least there are always those 99-year leases.
Going to Kashmir for a tourist visit almost 15 years ago isn't what would be considered a visit under normal conditions. Must have been quite the social calling.
The mid-1990s were about as bad as the place has been -- the most upheaval that exists in the living memory of people there.
