I've been diamond for 6-8 years now. I also have ALWAYS selected GP points for my stays. Not a once have I ever selected air miles except when it was an addition to my points like that UA bonus of 1500 or was it 2500 points 3 years ish ago where the UA miles were in addition to anything you got with your points.

Well now this five stay/30K AA miles promo pops up and for me personally its too good to pass up. It coincides with my Hyatt hotel hopping for business as well starting next week

Here is where the stupid questions that I should really know the answer to come in..
  • How does one go from selecting points to miles on my account?
You can't on your account. For each stay individually you can request either points or miles at checkin. Alternatively, you can call GP CS after a stay and have it switched to miles.
  • How does GP know to give miles or credit to my AA account? where do i input my AA#
You provide it at checkin or when you call CS.
  • if its after five stays, what shows up during the first four stays, assuming after stay 5 of the promo, the 30K in AA miles pops up?
The bonus will post as a seperate item after the 5th stay.
  • Status stay credit? it sure sounds like you get a elite qualifying stay credit, but does it post the same without any points?
    Yes and Yes.
  • How do I switch back after the five stays to GP points? same way that i switched over to miles?
as above, you can even mix stays back and forth if needed.
  • I haven't registered to select points or FFN yet? will this make a difference or will I be forced to go with FFNs since I have selected miles for some of my stays?
You can do either the 5K points / 2stays or the FFN's and still select miles for they stays.

Also, you will still earn the Diamond amenity points on miles stays.
