I understand that in a lot of other countries, flying standby and not having to pay for the fare difference is virtually unheard of -- such as with Qantas in Australia.
They seem to accept it as how things work.
With most airlines, in my experience - BA, LH, ... I appreciate being able to standby for an earlier flight on UA domestically, although this will no longer be free for 1P and below.
