They're over there poking theories that CAL is having financial problems, and due to the economic slowdown they don't need the jets, etc.

I noticed that as well, they are overlooking the obvious for a dramatic story, maybe they are into evening news journalism.
The official fleet plan is clearly showing those 735s you mentioned coming back in as a stopgap as well, which someone there suggested was a typo for 753s....
However it seems the 753s are being allowed to come into service, so seems they are either exempt from the seat issue, or not using the Koito seats.
