I'm going to Bali for just a few days next month, so I thought about getting a transit visa in advance. The website of the Indonesian Embassy in Washington says this is available for up to 14 days for $20. This is $5 less than the VOA, but I was more interested in skipping any VOA line at DPS than saving $5.
The clerk at the embassy first dismissed my request for any visa, handing me a paper about the VOA. When I pushed a bit, he insisted I needed a visit visa ($45 and requires bank statement, etc.) not a transit one. That seemed like too much trouble.
If they're really strict about "transiting" rather than "visiting", I'm not sure what circumstances would justify 14 days of transit. Anyway, I'll just hope the line isn't too long when I make it into DPS on a KL 777.
