How can you have a stopover in your city of origin? (Assuming the last 4 words apply to your itinerary, not your ethnicity/nationality!)

I can imagine your route (say ex AMS): AMS -- (2 night layover) -- AMS -- JFK -- LAX --- NRT --- etc, etc.
