It is only the US rules which determine whether they would allow you to add an extra coupon to your booking in this case or not. From an IATA perspective it has to be two coupons and you can not have more than 16 coupons on one ticket.
Sorry for the confusion, DownUnderFlyer - I appreciate your taking the time to consider this. If I decide to try & bend the US rules I'll report back whether I was successful. I may, however, just decide to play within the rules and book BOS-LAX,LAX-BKK instead of attempting BOS-ORD-NRT,NRT-BKK.

In case you're curious I'm trying to get from BOS to LLW - the long way around, so I can stopover in BKK on the return, all on one award.

I am also a CO member and I will be redeeming CO miles intra-Africa & intra-Asia. I find that US point requirements are better for the long-hauls and CO req's are better for intra-region.
