Also as stated, I'm already planning on using 4 segments (coupons) per direction - 8 total. My question was whether I can get a Y award on the BOS-ORD segment of UA881 and a C award on UA881 from ORD-NRT, all while treating BOS-ORD-NRT as one UA881 coupon.

But the the rules around max coupons, mixed coupons etc. are not made by *A hence my comments. It is only the US rules which determine whether they would allow you to add an extra coupon to your booking in this case or not. From an IATA perspective it has to be two coupons and you can not have more than 16 coupons on one ticket.
