The value of miles to me is in their constant value. I have yet to plan a trip in advance using miles; instead, I have used them for last minute changes, funerals, etc. It's valuable just to know that I can get somewhere quickly without paying thousands of dollars and it's also valuable to be able to buy a one-way ticket that is running $1100 for 12,500 miles, as I did for a funeral late last year.
