Also, look at the exit rows on the seat map. If those seats are wide open a couple of weeks before your flight, there are few elites on the flight and the odds of an upgrade are very good, even for non-EXPs. As noted, upgrade odds also vary by route. A few days ago, I booked LAX-OGG for this week and not a single exit row seat was occupied. Needless to say, the upgrades cleared at 100 hours.
