The Southwest Chase card has always been better then AMEX for earning an award....$1200/credit (plus double $$ for Southwest and partners like Hilton, Avis, etc) vs. $1500/credit for AMEX. So it takes $19,200 in spend to earn an award ticket w/ the Chase card vs $24,000 w/ AMEX. That's a much better deal than AMEX.
Perhaps I'm missing something, but I've been using the AMEX Gold which gives 3X the MR points on airfare purchases for my WN flight purchases. I buy $500 in Southwest flights and get 1,500 MR points versus having to spend $600 in Southwest flights to get 1,200 RR Dollars.
This math also doesn't take into account the Gold card's 15K MR bonus after hitting $30K in spend (if you spend that much) which gives an even better transfer than SPG's bonus and a feature that Chase WN card doesn't have.
but of course, everyone's situation is different - this change just cuts off this +% earning opportunity with WN.
